First, the Refrigerant Rule

Refrigerators, freezers, and window AC units contain refrigerant, the stuff a lot of people still call freon. By law that refrigerant has to be handled properly, which is why you cannot just set a fridge on the curb like a broken chair. Whoever takes the unit has to recover the refrigerant the right way before the metal gets crushed or recycled. That single rule is the reason every legit option below runs the unit through a program or a crew that knows how to deal with it.

Two more things worth knowing before you pick a route. First, a full-size refrigerator is heavy and awkward, and it likes to tip and scratch floors and door frames on the way out. Second, if it still runs, it may have a little value or at least be worth handing off to someone who needs one. If it is dead, skip straight to recycling it or having it hauled.

Option 1: Recycle It Through Your Power Utility

Some power utilities run appliance recycling programs, and a few even pay a rebate to take an old working fridge or freezer off your hands. The idea is simple: an old second fridge running in the garage burns a lot of electricity, so the utility would rather retire it and recycle it properly. When these programs are running, they usually pick the unit up from your house and handle the refrigerant for you.

These programs come and go and the rebate amounts change, so do not assume last year's deal still stands. Check your electric provider's current appliance recycling or rebate program before you count on it, and confirm the unit qualifies, since many programs only take working units of a certain size.

Option 2: Let the Retailer Haul It on Delivery

If you are replacing the appliance, this is often the easiest path. Many retailers will haul away your old unit when they deliver the new one. Sometimes it is free, sometimes it is a small add-on fee, and sometimes it only applies to the same type of appliance you are buying. Either way, the delivery crew is already there with a truck and a dolly, so it costs you nothing extra in effort.

The catch is you have to set it up ahead of time. Ask about old-unit removal when you place the order, get it added to the delivery ticket, and have the fridge emptied, defrosted, and pulled away from the wall before they show up. Confirm the details close to the date, because haul-away terms are not the same at every store.

Option 3: Take It to a Recycler Yourself

If you have a truck and a helper, you can haul the unit to a recycler that accepts appliances and handles the refrigerant. Scrap metal recyclers take a lot of the non-refrigerant appliances too, things like washers, dryers, dishwashers, and stoves, since those are mostly metal and have no freon to deal with. A fridge, freezer, or AC unit is the one to call ahead on, because the recycler needs to recover the refrigerant before it can take it.

• Call the recycler first and confirm they take that specific appliance and how they handle refrigerant.
• Empty and unplug it the night before, and tape the doors shut for the drive.
• Use a proper appliance dolly and a second set of hands. These units are heavier than they look.
• Ask about any fee up front, since some yards charge for refrigerant recovery and some pay for scrap metal.

Option 4: Hire Junk Removal (The Hands-Off Route)

When you do not have a truck, do not want to wrestle a fridge down the stairs, or just want it gone today, this is the route most people take. A crew disconnects the unit, carries it out without banging up your doorways, loads it, and hauls it off to be recycled or disposed of the right way. You do not lift anything and you do not chase down a program.
